Project Overview
Micro Parks created in underutilized spaces within the city
Project Details
The City Hall of Fortaleza has implemented Micro Parks in underutilized spaces within the city’s overcrowded areas. Micro Parks are a way to quickly and cost-effectively create public spaces within areas that are densely populated by the socially vulnerable, lacking in green spaces and lacking in areas for social activities. They have designed outdoor recreational spaces for all ages in order to restore the local community and increase their exposure to nature; and embracing the concept of an ecological playground, used natural elements such as tree trunks, branches and the topography of the land itself to create a children’s playground. Fortaleza City Hall integrated the residents’ opinions into the planning process through participatory workshops and public hearings and involved the local community in the preservation and care of the designed green spaces. To date, two pilot projects have been completed and 30 more Micro Parks are planned for completion by 2024.
