• The site of Xicotencatl Park was a deep, valley-like streambed that was filled with tons of urban debris. Unauthorized constructions of cardboard and cinder blocks stood over the steep slopes of the streambed, and there was a pressing need for a public space to prevent the degradation of the area and connect the residents. In order to solve insufficient budget issues, the local tire-wall construction system was adopted; urban debris piled up on the site and used tires became platforms on the embankment and formed the ground of a park. The park was laid out in a step-like manner to allow rainwater to drain off, and by implementing perimetral rainwater runoff canals, they were able to reduce flood risk, landslides and erosion. Xicotencatl Park has now become a space where residents of both sides of the streambed can meet, communicate and enjoy diverse recreational activities.
