LADIS, the world’s first cap-type UV water sterilizer, achieved remarkable results in just three months after being distributed to rural villages in Bokeo, Laos—reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases by 58%. Parents expressed relief that their children no longer suffer from diarrhea, and in the Philippines, a similar 67% reduction was recorded. These changes are more than statistics; they represent healthier lives, fewer hospital visits, and renewed hope for communities long deprived of safe water.
General Information
The Light of life(LADIS) project began with a simple yet powerful mission: to provide safe drinking water anytime, anywhere. LADIS is a cap-type UV sterilizer designed to prevent waterborne infectious diseases and promote hygienic daily life. It is especially valuable in environments with unsafe water and for people with vulnerable immune systems.
This human-centered design combines technology with care. By replacing a standard PET bottle cap with LADIS and pressing a button, the UV light activates for 3 minutes, eliminating 99.9% of bacteria such as E. coli. It operates without filters or chemicals and can be reused sustainably through charging, making it a truly innovative solution.
LADIS has proven its effectiveness in various real-world settings—from rural villages in Laos to hospitals in Ukraine. It has reduced waterborne illnesses, restored trust in water, and brought peace of mind to families and patients. Its simplicity, affordability, and functionality reflect the core values of sustainable design.
Ultimately, LADIS is more than just a product—it is a symbol of recovery and coexistence. We hope this small device can turn everyday water use into a safer, more dignified experience, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable world.
Creative Solution (Creativity/Innovation)
LADIS is world’s first cap-type UV sterilizer for drinking water. This device replaces the cap of a PET bottle and sterilizes the water. And It is very simple to use:
· Replace the PET bottle cap with LADIS
· Press the button
· The UV lamp activates and runs for 3minutes.
It removes 99.9% of bacteria from up to 2 liters of water, providing users with safe drinking water. Once fully charged, this device can be used up to 60 times. The lamp used in LADIS has an impressive lifespan of 15,000 hours. Since each operation lasts only 3 minutes, LADIS can be used semi-permanently with regular recharging.
Social Impact (Inspiration/Impact)
Just three months after distributing our product to rural villages in Bokeo, Laos, the incidence of waterborne diseases fell by 58%. Local parents told us, with relief and joy, that their children no longer suffer from diarrhea. In the Philippines, too, we witnessed a 67% reduction in waterborne illnesses. These numbers represent more than just statistics — they reflect healthier lives, fewer hospital visits, and renewed hope for communities long plagued by unsafe water.
Participation/Cooperation
This cap-type UV water sterilizer started as my university graduation project. I led every stage—from development to export. While serving as a first lieutenant, I won the grand prize in a Samsung competition, which led to their support and the beginning of our collaboration.
Vision for the Future
LADIS has also been deployed in Ukraine’s post-war recovery efforts, in addition to its use in Laos. In Ukraine, the product is used in hospitals to provide safe drinking water to patients requiring strict hygiene. Beyond that, LADIS has been distributed to hospitals and rural communities in Uganda, Philippines, Timor-Leste, and Nigeria — helping solve serious drinking water hygiene problems in each region. With this proven track record and the meaningful stories behind it, we are now expanding into developed markets. Our mission is clear: to bring safe drinking water to every corner of the world where waterborne risks still exist.
