Project Overview

An eco-friendly design and community engagement project using seaweed removed from local beaches

Project Details

  • The aim of this project is to discover the value of seaweed, an abundant natural material in the region, and engage local members in activities that increase the utilization of this material, which in turn benefits both humans and the environment. A staggering amount of seaweed accumulates every year on Bačvice beach, a famous tourist destination in Croatia. The local ecological association Picigin Bačvice regularly cleans the beach to host various outdoor sports including Picigin, a native ballgame played in the water. A series of products were designed using dried seaweed and used as interior décor therefore, sold at a Voca café nearby with the profits being donated to a local association that removes the seaweed. Voga café, run by members of the association, has become a place of healthy socializing through hosting exhibitions of local artists and much more.
